Why or What?

My youngest son that is 2.10 years old has learned the wonderful phrase of “what?” or “huh?”.  The boy is smart as a whip and has understood and followed directions well before he ever spoke a word. Now I find myself repeating everything I say at least 4 times and rephrasing to clarify as simply as possible.  He is so darn cute when he looks at you with his nose and eyebrows crinkled and I know it’s just a phase.

Yesterday with the weather nice and took a nice long walk in the stroller. While walking I would point out different landmarks or things like pink flowers on trees, ducks in a pond and every comment was followed by the “what?”. Repeat and point, “huh?”, rephrase, “what”. Then finally an “ohhh yeah” and make his own comment on the topic.

As it is, I often joke that I talk all day long, isn’t that the role of moms? Giving directions, explanations, corrections, asking for clarification, reading, praise, repeating for those that choose not to hear you ask to pick up the shoes the first 2 times… talk talk talk. I find that by the end of the day and finally getting the kids in bed I just don’t want to talk anymore. And boy I feel bad that I actually get have been getting to the point that at about the third “huh?” I reply “never mind” which then starts the next round of “what?” and he won’t let it go.

I know it’s not a medical issue he hears just fine, it is just the habit of actually saying it and the process.  I’m sure the next one that will be coming is the “why”- Everyone can relate to that question that has spent any amount of time with children. Again, it’s not a bad thing for kids to be curious about the world around them but is it bad for a mom to just want a five minute span without speaking??
