Emergency room at 2:30 a.m.

I guess I shouldn’t complain, in my seven years of parenthood tonight, or last night, depending on how you look at it was my first time rushing one of the kids to the emergency room at 2:30 a.m..

The disappointing thing? Besides him still being sick….is that he had a good day. I know that’s normal with the croup, good days+tough nights, but I really thought we were over the hump. Temp was gone, cough quiet, perking up a bit until I could here every breath he was taking as he walked down the hall to my room at 2:00 a.m.

Direct into the steamy bathroom with no fix. Quick move to the cool outside air.. no difference. The poor little boo just could not get the air in and once he started coughing..well it just makes you feel helpless. So I threw on my sweatpants and packed him in the car for the emergency room.

Once we arrived I was lucky that the nurse heard us - ok, him, coming in and wisked us directly into a room where we started with more drugs right away to help his airways open.  We needed to wait for another couple hours to make sure there was no rebound so he slept on my chest while I held the tube bellowing a fine mist into his nose and could feel his chest begin to relax against mine.

I have to admit I started falling asleep a couple times and nap jerked myself back to the present afraid the mist would be too far from his little nose. I just sat and held him and kissed his head and thought about how long it had been since that was all I had to do- sit and hold him, not distracted by other kids or chores, just sit. I wish it was under better circumstances but we made it through.

We arrived home at 6:30 a.m. after we were cleared to head home.  One good thing about the dark mornings- little boo and I climbed into the big warm bed next to my husband and we were able to catch a couple more zzz’s before the house awoke and started to buzz. Keeping fingers crossed that baby Tanner doesn’t get it.
