Husband M.I.A.

Today is monday and it’s back into the routine of the week. I promised the kids a trip to the playground after school as long as their homework was completed without complaining right after school. They did and I was happy so off we went.
We arrived home around 5:30 p.m. and I started dinner and of course, the inevitable crankies came upon us. My husband was home at a decent hour and I was happy that he would be home to help double team the kids and get them in bed on time if not sooner.
So as I herded the group upstairs for showers and pulling beds of course playing referee with baby on the shoulder I suddenly wondered where my partner, who I thought would be helping move this process along, was. I asked the kids and everyone shrugged their shoulders- I took a quick peek down the stairs and thought he must have run outside for something. Finally showers were finished, kids in jammies and books picked out and still no husband…..hmmm…
I came downstairs and went to look outside and POOF! There he was… ready? HIDING ON THE KITCHEN FLOOR BEHIND THE COUNTER READING THE PAPER! Oh KAYYY!
Now, he is a good husband and dad don’t get me wrong and he does more then many dads when it comes to bed routines so that’s not my point. But was I ready to ring his neck? Yes.  Of course, all I could do was laugh at what a sad sight this was- like one of the kids caught red handed. He swears his back was sore and he was just trying to stretch while reading the latest synopsis on the Red Sox games but come on… I’m the mom, I’ve heard them all. And really, he couldn’t hear all the screaming and banging upstairs and think “hmm, the kids will be in bed in a half hour THEN I’ll read the paper?” He did pull himself off the floor and help read stories but I think he felt guilty because he volunteered to finish cleaning the kitchen.
