Show and Tell

My five year old really dislikes going to kindergarten. I hate to admit it, but ok, he hates going to school.  It’s not that he is unhappy while there, he’s fine from what the teacher tells me and when asked his only reason is that someone is always telling him to do something, go somewhere or complete an assignment. In other words, he wants to stay home in his underwear all day and play legos.

We found the only way that he gets dressed and completes his morning routine without an hour of screaming and tantrums is that he brings in a show and tell item. After conversing with his teacher, we decided that this was a fine tactic and he can bring something to share whenever he wants. This has worked without fail for the last two months. Sometimes, almost missing the bus while he scours the bottom of the toy box for that just perfect something- but he does it.

Well, this week he decided to bring in a small baggie of his precious lego star wars mini figs, four to be exact. For the first time, they did NOT come home in his backpack like all other show and tell items.  When asked on their whereabouts, his head hung low looking at his feet I’m sure the memory of the stern reminder before school to be responsible for what you take in was still ringing in his ears. He felt bad as it was, they were his very special little men, for me of course was remembering what I went thru on EBay to win those little guys against all the “collectors” that swore they would never touch a childs hands.

I gave him one day to find them as he promised  they had fallen out of an unzippered pocket and were not confiscated by the teacher for not following directions. I thought for sure that they fell out and some other little boy was very happy to find such a treasure and simply slipped them in his pocket.  The grandparents were also given the low down as they know how precious these little mini-figs were to their grandsons play.

After not finding them on the bus and “forgetting” to ask his teacher at school, I sent a note in.  Wouldn’t you know they came home that day? I guess I won’t know for sure if they were truely lost or simply confiscated by the teacher but as his grandmother simply stated in an email after we called to share the great news “Isn’t it funny how something so small can make so many people so happy?”
